Advanced Physician Weight Management

is a physician-directed weight loss program. Each person is evaluated and treated individually from the first FREE consultation visit to the maintenance phase of weight behavioral modifications to effect a healthy weight (fat) loss while maintaining lean body tissues. Increased vitality, restful rejuvenating sleep and improved overall well-being are important by-products of our program.

As a member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, we adhere to guidelines for best weight management practices.

These include:

A complete medical history and physical examination "executive type".
A detailed dietary history, weight-gain, medication and surgical history are extremely important. The physical examination excludes the pelvis. The family history is also important to uncover any genetic tendencies for weight gain.

Extensive state-of-the-art laboratory testing performed by our CLIA-Certified laboratory and reference laboratories in Montgomery and Birmingham. These tests are performed in order to rule out and identify any underlying medical condition which could be contributing to your weight gain or the lack of your weight loss.

Complete body composition determination including your basal metabolism.
From this we determine your specific calorie needs.

Development of an initial plan personalized for you. This includes your nutritional plan, physical activity implementation, and recommendations for supplements.

Tell me about a typical visit.

At each visit you will be evaluated with vital signs and weight and/or measurements will be taken to assess your progress. Periodically your body composition is repeated to insure that your weight loss is primarily fat and you lean body mass is being maintained or strengthened. We review your diary to be sure your nutrient balance is being maintained and we provide help with challenges such as cravings, side-effects, and depression. We also follow your home blood sugar monitoring so that we know when to decrease diabetic medication as you lose weight. We closely follow your physical activity so that your plan remains challenging and fun. Any medication changes are made at the visit.

How Fast Will I Lose Weight?

As you lose weight we recalculate your nutritional needs based on your new basal metabolism so that you continue to lose the fat. We expect an average of 2 lbs/week loss and just as importantly we aim to keep the weight off.

What About Information?

Knowledge is everything so we keep you abreast of the latest research and developments in obesity treatment and in other related diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea.

Are There Materials That I Receive?

A very good plain-English reference manual on Overweight and Obesity is given on your first visit. We update this periodically. We also provide a small food/activity diary, a fast-food calculator and a macro-nutrient choice content booklet. We have a library of books, pamphlets, and video tapes. Also, each week you can view various tapes to introduce you to different forms of exercises and discussions on chemical conditions of interest.

What If I Already Have a Doctor? Will I Have To Change Doctors?

You do not have to change doctors. You have to be referred to the specialists at Advanced Physicians Weight Management just as your doctor would refer you to an orthopedic specialist for your bone treatment. We accept referrals from many physicians. If you are referred by a doctor or health care provider, with your permission, we will provide your doctor timely updates on your progress. We will contact your doctor whenever we propose a change in your medications or weight management plan.

Are There Group Classes?

Small nutrition and exercise group classes are offered so you gain maximum benefit from our program. Our consultants are experienced in weight management and are experts in their individual fields.
